Three Capes Track Day 4

In February 2020, our journey on the Three Capes Track was a breathtaking adventure. From bonding with fellow trekkers to conquering Mount Fortescue and marveling at ancient rainforests and coastal cliffs, every step was a revelation. As we left for home, little did we know that it would be our last trip for a while. This unforgettable experience comes highly recommended.

Three Capes Track Day 3

In January 2020, we embarked on a treacherous journey to explore Cape Pillar, encountering everything from misty mornings with screeching cockatoos to a snake-infested boardwalk. As we approached the Blade and Tasman Island’s desolate lighthouse, we pondered the island’s tragic history. The landscape also revealed its rich Aboriginal and colonial past. Despite the hardships, we pressed on, eager for our next adventure at Retakunna. Who knew what tomorrow would bring?

Three Capes Track Day 2

January 2020 We awoke to our first full day of the Three Capes Track with a mission. Get to the second hut as quickly as possible. It was bushfire season and the fire warnings were high this day. The next boat load of walkers would not be able to join the walk and we had […]

Three Capes Track Day 1

In January 2020, the author embarked on a 4-day hike on the Three Capes Track in Tasmania, requiring meticulous preparation and a boat transfer from Hobart. The track, a significant investment, offers a rugged coastal walk through diverse landscapes and visits to historic sites. The journey began with an eco-cruise and a stay in the first hut, with plans to tackle challenging conditions ahead.

Tasmania Hinterland: Road Trip

On a road trip through Tasmania, we explored the eastern part, journeying from Hobart to Launceston and then west to Cradle Mountain National Park. Passing historic towns like New Norfolk and Hamilton, we encountered convict-era buildings and learned about the region’s Polish immigrant history. Our destination, Pumphouse Point, provided a unique retreat by the glacial Lake St. Clair.

Hobart: An Expected Journey

January 2020 Our birthdays are only 4 days apart so back in 2009 we decided that in lieu of really fancy gifts we would divert some of the attention and money to a trip away to celebrate. Our first trip was to New York – in the January snow. Continuing on this tradition in January […]

Tasmania Highlights

Although our road trip around Tassie was only 10 days, a relatively short trip for us, we managed to squeeze plenty in. John navigated us along the windy country roads, while Karen manouvered the clumsy camper in and out of great lookout spots. Since we had ‘settled’ in Sydney this was our first big trip […]

MONA Lisa Smiled?

As we pulled out of the car park it disappeared and the warning sign came on. We were potentially in a lot of trouble. Did we have enough of our unknown quantities of fuel left for the 36km up and down trip to the nearest petrol station?… Just! Like a scene out of Hollywood the […]

The Port of King Arthur

On our last full day in Tasmania we took a drive to the nearby Port Arthur World Heritage Site. Located on the Tasman peninsula it was a topsy turvy drive down the peninsula and we did it on the last bar of petrol – content that we would have enough to make it back to […]

Island of Maria

It was only a 15 minute drive down to Triabunna but we had an early start in order to make the boat for the nearby Maria Island. We were delighted to leave Bogan-ville and waited to have breakfast at the docks in Triabunna so we could leave that bit earlier. The weather was pretty bad. […]

The Glass is half full!

Sydney: January 13th ===================== Sat on our couch, tea cups half full, we poured over the travel guides and Lonely Planet:Tasmania in search of some last minute ‘big ticket’ items to add to our itinerary. As Karen skimmed through the book it opened on the section for Coles Bay on the east coast. As we […]

March of the Birthday Penguins!

After a mammoth driving session the day before it would just be a short jaunt down the A3 Coastal Highway to our next stop and more importantly the site of Karen’s 30th Birthday celebrations – Bicheno. But first up it was time for Karen to open up her cards and presents. Karen always aspired to […]
