Our final stop in Melbourne was the Melbourne Museum, situated in the lush Carlton Garden. Only a short walk from our apartment in Fitzroy. The Melbourne Museum is a beautiful building designed by Denton Corker Marshall Architects. The construction was only finished in 2001. With the sun shinning on the beautiful building we captured some good shots before entering the exhibitions.
Melbourne Museum explores life in Victoria, including the natural environment, culture and history. It houses has multiple permanent collection in eight galleries, including one just for children. Highlights in the Muesum include a complete skeleton of a blue whale and the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre- there seems to be a lack of info on the Aboriginals in Australia. So we enjoyed learning a little more here. There is also IMAX theatre on site, which to John’s disappointment we never visited.
After the Museum there was just enough time for a last supper in Fitzroy before saying goodbye to Anne and Niall. We were about to take our final journey for a while. We both had mixed emotions as we boarded the flight to Sydney. It had taken us 9 months to get to this point. There were a few times when we wondered if we would ever make it. Suddenly our journey was going to come to a stop over for while. The normality we had craved was upon us, were we ready to settle into routine again…I guess we would find out.
