🎬 Glasgow Film Walking Tour

Glasgow City Centre & Cathedral Quarter (2 hours on foot)

Start: St Vincent Street (Corner of Wellington St)

Walk 10 min to: George Square

  • What to look for: This steep canyon of stone became 1960s Manhattan for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny—the parade sequence with bagpipers, floats and horse/motorbike stunt work ran right down here. It is also modern-day Manhattan where filming for Spiderman: Brand New Day has just wrapped (August 2025). The big chase scenes were down this street as was the chase scene from The Flash.
  • On your way you will pass the Lloyd’s Bank building (110 St Vincent Street) that doubled as the US Federal Reserve Bank in Spiderman.
  • Sci-fi fans will also recognise scenes from Cloud Atlas and the upcoming Edgar Wright directed The Running Man movie starring Glen Powell.

George Square

  • What to look for: The square doubled as downtown Philadelphia in World War Z—spot the façades along George Street and the taxi-lined chaos from the big set piece. It also appears in chase shots for The Flash and Hobbs and Shaw. You can also see it in Cloud Atlas

Walk 2mins to Cochrane Street (south of the square)

  • What to look for: This is the street where Brad Pitt gets out of his car in World War Z and works out something is not right. It’s also featured during Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’s NYC parade setup; production dressed the surrounding streets with Stars-and-Stripes and ticker-tape.

Turn south onto John Street (under the archway)

  • What to look for: The Singl-end Cafe – Time for a cup of coffee and maybe some scran (food). Once you are finished, look back towards Cochrane Street and you will see the Glasgow City Chambers Archway you would have walked under. It is here that Batfleck chases the mobsters in The Flash and Idris Elba chases Hobbs and Shaw. This also doubled as Whitehall in London in 2017s Churchill movie.

Walk 16 min north – east to: Glasgow Cathederal

  • What to look for: The easiest route is to walk north up John Street, past some of Strathclyde University and take left when you reach Cathedral Street. Walk all the way east and you cannot miss the Cathedral.
  • The cathedral’s crypt doubled as L’HĂ´pital des Anges in Outlander (Season 2). Inside, you’ll recognise the ribbed vaults from Claire’s hospital scenes.

5 minutes uphill to: Glasgow Necropolis (entrance at Cathedral Square)

  • What to look for: After walking under the Bridge of Sighs – the hillside cemetery stood in for Gotham in The Batman—notably the motorcycle sequence at the end. This also affords you great skyline views back over the city.

Finish options:
• Stroll back to the centre (15–20 min) or
• Hop on the Subway at Buchanan Street for the West End add-on below.

Map

Optional West End Add-On (60–90 min + Subway)

Ride Subway: Buchanan Street → Hillhead (8 mins), then 10-min walk to: University of Glasgow (Gilbert Scott Building & Cloisters)

  • What to look for: The Cloisters played Harvard University in Outlander (Seasons 3–4). The arches also pop up in other productions like Cloud Atlas.

Walk 8–10 min through: Kelvingrove Park (Prince of Wales Bridge)

  • What to look for: Used as “Boston” park scenes in Outlander (Claire with Brianna, S3). It’s a pretty cut-through walk to the museum.

End at: Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum (optional)

  • A handy cultural stop before returning via Subway from Kelvinhall or Hillhead. The front of the building was used in The Flying Scotsman (2006) as the headquarters of the World Cycling Federation.

Practical tips

  • Best order: Do City Centre → Cathedral → (Subway) West End to keep climbs gentle.
  • Access: Cathedral crypt is free but check opening times; Necropolis is open daylight hours. visitglasgow.com
  • Film-spotting cheat sheet: George Square = World War Z, The Flash; St Vincent Street/City Chambers = Indiana Jones 5, Spiderman: Brand New Day ; Cathedral Crypt = Outlander; Necropolis = The Batman.
