It was bound to happen at some stage. We had seen enough evidence of it on the roadside. This morning we had a wildlife tour of the Wheatbelt.
Within the first ten minutes driving Karen spotted ears over the crest in the road – a kangaroo was sitting on the middle of the road. We had to slow down to avoid it as it bounced along beside us. Some local with some dogs in a pickup coming the other direction startled it and it started jumping into a fence. Poor skippy 😦
That wasn’t the end of it. The following animals also ran out in front of us:
- Gallah Bird
- Another rabbit
- Ring necked parrot.
That and also the encounter with 10 unmanned railway crossings. When we finally got to Hyden, Karen’s arms had to prised off the steering wheel. She was frazzled!
Wave Rock is a natural rock formation that is shaped like a tall breaking ocean wave. Which is totally out of place as it’s nowhere near the sea. At 14m high it’s also impressively big. Time for some tourist snaps. Luckily we wore some loud colours to stand out.
For the pop culture fans, you will remember Wave Rock from an Episode of “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” and the amazing game franchise Sly Cooper.
Located nearby was another rock formation called the Hippo’s Yawn. At 12.6 Meters tall it was almost as big as Wave Rock itself. It reminded us of one of those Hungry Hippos!
We were back in the car and on the way to York. With no accommodation booked for a Saturday night it was a big risk rocking up there. But no risk – no reward. The drive to York was some of the best country scenery yet. Flowing wheat fields of pure gold competed with lush green pastures and gnarly woodland for our attention.
We arrived in Brookton for some fuel, and luckily we got there just in time as the only petrol station within 100kms was shutting early for the Beverley Fair. Like at 1pm early!!
Funnily enough the next stop was Beverley. As we drove through town we looked our for signs of this massive country expo. We didn’t see anything or anyone.Driving on we reached York and luckily secured a great room in a random place called Spooky Hall. They only have two rooms and don’t advertise. We took it.
More on our stay in York in the next post!
Wave Rock: a long drive for some photos. Would we go back again? Maybe not!
